Boyer too strong for gutsy Queenslander
VETERAN Queenslander Michael Look was no match for American rival Dusty Boyer in the second round of the Cairns Tennis International yesterday, losing 6-4 4-6 6-2.
The fourth seed from Redcliffe struggled early in the match, but rallied in the second set with strong rallying to take it to a third.
But the 30-year-old was blown off the court in the decider, conceding two breaks to lose in 2 hours 7 minutes.
Boyer will now play seventh seed Australian Jacob Grills in the quarter-finals. The Nebraska product said he was enjoying Australian conditions.
“I like the heat and there’s enough breeze out here to help you breathe,” he said.
“It was tough but it was nice to have a three-setter.”
The American, 25, said he did not know anything about Grills ahead of their match.
Grills is in Cairns under the eye of coach Wayne Arthurs.
The young Victorian won his way through to the quarters after blitzing Ken Cavrak 6-2 6-1 in less than an hour.
In other matches, number one men’s seed Jeremy Beale made light work of Calum Pettergill, winning 6-1 6-1 in 57 minutes.
The UK’s Ryan James Storrie enjoyed a tough 6-4 7-6 (8-6) win against Frenchman Vincent Stouff.
The sixth seed took an hour and 52 minutes to beat the Cairns Open champion.
British compatriot Evan Hoyt had no problems dispatching Aussie Lucas Vuradin 6-3 6-0, while third seed Brydan Klein eliminated China’s Aoran Wang 6-1 6-2. There was an upset when wildcard Jayden Court defeated fellow Australian Edward Bourchier 7-5 6-3. Court will now play Storrie in the quarters.
