Privacy concern at units project
A THREE-level, 12 apartment unit block is poised to take advantage of a Coral Sea vista at Trinity Beach if given the green light from Cairns Regional Council.
A request to divide 3 Mararna St into two lots has been received by the council. The developer is also seeking approval of a development application, which would pave the way for the construction of a three-level tower called Trinity Beach Apartments.
“The development will be constructed on the generally level area of the ridge and step across the site, affording sweeping sea views,” the application reads.
Homeowner David Young lives on Moore St, directly across the road from the planned development, and is vehemently opposed to the proposed apartments.
“It’s a disgrace and it doesn’t pay any attention to people living around there who have been there for a long time,” he said.
A basement carpark with space for 24 vehicles is also planned with access from Moore St.
Mr Young said units facing Moore St would have an unobstructed view into his front yard and expected the value of his home to drop.
“If you have neighbours looking over into your swimming pool it is going to have an effect on the value of the property,” he said. Approval was given for the development in 2008, but the application expired in 2016 and the developer reapplied last week.
The planned development is slated as code assessable, meaning no community consultation is required before approval. The developer said plans for the lot were in compliance with CairnsPlan 2016 and it is claimed the apartments will improve safety and security in the area. “(It will) unify the streetscape and facilitate urban consolidation and infill development, land use policies supported by the council,” the application reads.
