LG rolling out Google Assistant

- Nick Whigham

IF YOU like the idea of your TV being the focal point of your smart home, then LG has some good news for you.

The electronics manufacturer has partnered with Google to integrate the tech giant’s AI-powered Google Assistant into its 2018 smart TVs.

LG has been rolling out software updates to its TVs in Australia, making the new compatibility available to all those who have bought a 2018 LG AI ThinQ TV.

So-called smart TVs have been on the market for a number of years but for a while you could argue that they didn’t really deserve the moniker.

But partnerships like this between LG and Google mean the TVs can increasingly act as a genuine smart device.

By holding the microphone button and speaking into the remote, you can ask the TV all sorts of questions around things like traffic updates, news headlines, weather forecasts and restaurant suggestions.

If you want to multi-task while watching a movie, you can use the TV to set reminders and update your smartphone connected calendar as well as control other devices in the home like smart light bulbs and other connected appliances, all with your voice.

Users can also ask the LG TV to adjust the volume, change the channel, flick between inputs or open up Netflix. If you lose the control you can simply ask Google “to tell LG” to control the TV functions.

“The beauty of this technology is that you can just talk to your TV, you don’t need a remote,” said LG’s Angus Jones.
