‘Sexist’ tax gets axed

-

A “SEXIST” and “unfair” consumption tax applied to women’s sanitary products will be ditched from January 1.

State and territory treasurers unanimously backed the change during a meeting with federal Treasurer Josh Frydenberg in Melbourne yesterday.

This means the 10 per cent GST impost will be gone in less than three months.

Federal Minister for Women Kelly O’Dwyer said efforts to remove the tax have had a “tortured history”, adding “we’re really delighted that everyone’s come on board”. DEATH-DEFYING: Pictured is the site with cranes at the old Imax Theatre, where a base jumper, French national Jonathan Perherin, allegedly climbed a crane and jumped at Darling Harbour. A 24-YEAR-OLD French national will face court charged over an alleged early morning BASE jump off a crane in Sydney.

Jonathan Perherin, 24, is alleged to have parachuted over a busy motorway and Darling Harbour before landing on Darling Drive in Pyrmont in the early hours of Tuesday.

Police say there were tears in his parachute and he could have died during the stunt.

But Perherin, who was charged over the incident, says he has no regrets.

“No, because I do what I like, I know this is forbidden, but I don’t regret because I’m alive,” he told Network Ten.

Perherin is scheduled to appear at Downing Centre Local Court on October 17.
