Maxwell accepts spot in Victoria’s batting order

- RUSSELL GOULD

GLENN Maxwell hasn’t asked for a move up the Victorian batting order despite watching on as players from other states rack up the centuries he’s chasing.

After opening the JLT OneDay Cup with 80 to lead the Vics to a win, Maxwell has racked up scores of 21 twice, 25 and 33 coming in after his bigscoring teammates.

Cameron White and Peter Handscomb have twice put together 100-run partnerships in the five games for Victoria leaving Maxwell, batting at No.5, with little opportunity to join the hundred-making party.

There have been 13 triplefigure scores through the competition including two from Queensland slugger Chris Lynn as he makes a strong bid to return to the Australian limited overs teams.

Maxwell’s position in both the Australian one-day and T20 sides isn’t in question, but having been overlooked for the Test squad and urged by coach Justin Langer to get “hundreds”, every innings without reaching 100 hurts his cause.

The Vics finished with a 2-3 record after the opening five games and play a knockout quarter-final against NSW today and Maxwell will retain his place in the middle order.

“We feel the team is better functioning if he’s at five,” Victorian coach Andrew McDonald said. “… there’s been no conversations other than that, about the (team) structure ….”
