Anger at portable dwellings

TRANSPORTABLE accommodation visible from the Holloways Beach access road has come under the scrutiny of both the council and residents.

Longtime resident Felicity De Vries said she was upset the drive through cane fields to Holloways Beach now felt more like a trip through a “dump site”.

“There is about five or six of them (accommodation units) and they are just ugly,” she said. “It looks like it’s an industrial site but it has been zoned as agricultural.

“I have got no idea what they are doing there.”

The block, at 22 Holloways Beach Rd is zoned as rural and there have been whispers the land was slated for the development of an outback experience, though no development application has been lodged with Cairns Regional Council. UGLY: The site near Holloways Beach.

A council spokeswoman said an enforcement order has been issued to the landowner whose transportable dwellings are alleged to be in breach of various bylaws. No specifics were given by council about what action would be taken if the order was not complied with.

The property owner declined the offer of an interview with the Cairns Post, but said the buildings have been sold and are waiting to be collected. He said he would be disputing the enforcement order.

The council enforcement order must be complied with before October 19.
