Insulted by association
I GENERALLY don’t like to write letters to the local paper to be critical, but on this instance I really felt the need to do so.
I read Nick Dalton’s editorial comment in the Cairns Post on October 4 and it left me and others very angry and extremely upset. In fact I have never felt so insulted in my life.
What was particularly galling was Mr Dalton’s claim that those living in the Daintree community were “fiercely parochial” and “anti-everything”. Nothing could be further from the truth.
Mr Dalton, like you, we simply want access to things like reliable power, good infrastructure and comfortable living.
This is the type of stuff that you take for granted.
I would also like to point out that the Douglas Shire Sustainability Group, of which the former mayor Mike Berwick and current Mayor Julia Leu are members, do not in any way, shape or form represent the overwhelming majority of those living in the Daintree community.
The group’s membership is almost non-existent and I cannot say who they represent because no one I speak to will have anything to do with them.
Mr Dalton, before you go trashing our wonderful community next time, maybe it would be wise to do your homework instead of drinking the kool-aid dished up by the Douglas Sustainability Group.
The narrow-mindedness that you attempted to tar the entire Daintree community with would be more of an apt description of Mr Berwick and Ms Leu. Russell O’Doherty, Diwan
