FNQ GOLF

Sunday saw the opening round of the 2018 Golf World Cairns FNQGA Pennant Season. Before getting into the match ups, a couple of worthy mentions. Thanks to Gordonvale GC, its committee, and staff (Club House, Spotters and Drinks Cart); all reports have been of a well-run day, well presented course and their greens being in great condition. Rob Riggall, Mick Gautrey and their helpers and volunteers have put in a tremendous effort to have their greens putting and playing consistently with a good roll. Keeping in mind earlier this year Gordonvale GC lost a number of greens to a couple of nasty bugs and disease as well as deliberate interference/chemical spraying recently on 3 greens. Barry Peacock from Half Moon Bay had his first ever a hole in one on the Par 3 5th today as well; congratulations Barry. Warm conditions kicked off the day but the breeze came in about 10.30am and cooled the day off a little. Half Moon GC took out all 3 Grades against Mossman GC, Mareeba GC beat Innisfail GC in A and B Grade and Innisfail GC winning C Grade. Cairns GC took out A and B Grades from Atherton GC however the Atherton C Grade side stopped it from being a clean sweep. Thanks also to the participating Clubs and players, some old rivalries renewed and a few new ones begun; by all reports a hassle free and enjoyable day. Next week sees Mossman GC hosting and their draw and details will be provided later this week.

MILLAA MILLAA

With one round of the Falls Tea House/Malanda RSL Monthly Medals to go before the finals in December, a determined field hit the links in an effort for a playoff spot. A glorious spring day didn’t translate to glorious scoring with hard running fairways spoiling many a scorecard. A big congratulations though to the green keeping staff for the transformation to the greens which were fast but fair. Paul Graham’s impromptu water truck delivering the goods. Holding the club house lead for ages Mr Never Ever Ever had his hopes crushed as Greg Taylor came in with a marvellous net 63 to pip Alan Hapgood with his net 64. Happy left ruing his quad bogey on number 6. Wayne Norris’s solid form continues with third place with a net 68. Some of the other men’s scores were unfortunate to say the least. A dry Royal Millaa Millaa can be a harsh arena. The ladies medal was collected by Carol Howard utilising Margaret’s previous win points for a nail biting one shot victory. That now leaves November as the last chance to appear in the annual championship. NTP’s 1/10 Bob Collyer, 5/14 Marg Azar who claimed it off Ashley Healy with her second only time landing on the postage stamp sized green, well done Margie. 8/17 went to Carol. None of the guys could hold the 3/12 green. Next week sees the Malanda Caltex/ Tropic Petroleum Stableford trophy day. Remember the AGM is next Sunday starting at 8am. A huge thanks to the executive and committee for making this last year a great one for the club.
