Farrar impresses

CAIRNS Netball Associatio­n’s juniors did not have results go their way in the inaugural City v Country Under-18 Series but emerging youngster Salmui Farrar had a reason to smile. Farrar was selected in the under-17 Queensland squad, which was announced over the weekend. In the City v Country series, City claimed all three games, with Country consisting of three Far North juniors, Chantelle Tikitau, Rachel Fa’anana and Esther Ratalatala. “Country lost all three games but our girls played well,” Cairns Netball Associatio­n operations manager Kym McPhee-Smith said.

Half Moon Bay shines

HALF Moon Bay golf club got off to a hot start in the first round of the 2018 Golf World Cairns FNQGA Pennant Season, winning all three grades over rivals Mossman on Sunday. Gordonvale golf club hosted the opening round for the 2018 season. FNQ Golf Associatio­n president Danny Bradley said some quality golf was played. “Half Moon Bay took out all three grades against Mossman, Mareeba beat Innisfail in A and B grade and Innisfail GC winning C grade,” Bradley said. “Cairns took out A and B grades from Atherton, however the Atherton C grade side stopped it from being a clean sweep. “Barry Peacock from Half Moon had his first ever hole-in-one on the par-three 5th today as well.”

Give sailing a go

TINAROO Sailing Club is holding a Discover Sailing day this Saturday, October 13, 2-4pm. “We’ll have all sorts of boats skippered by experience­d sailors for anyone of any age to try,” said Tinaroo Sailing Club Commodore Roger Wadley. “All you need to do is wear sunsmart clothes and sunscreen, and we’ll supply everything else.”

Ireland gets invite

POPULAR St Lucia swimmer Jack Ireland has been invited to compete at the Australian Short Course Championsh­ips as part of the Dolphins Para Short Course Camp. The invitation from Swimming Australia followed his recent world-class times at a Pan Pac Para meet where he represente­d the Australian developmen­t squad.
