North v South Challenge Six TFNQDBA bowlers have been named in the inaugural North v South Lawn Bowls Challenge, Northern team. The Inaugural Qld North versus South Challenge will be held at the Suburban Bowls Club in Townsville on November 3 & 4. The format for this event will be: Men’s and Women’s teams, 12 players per team, 3 rinks of fours, 3 tests of 21 ends, 2 games Saturday and 1 game Sunday. Selected TFNQ bowlers, Ben Cribbin (Edge Hill), Colin Kelly (Edge Hill), Ashley Hammond (Edge Hill), Christine Scott (Marlin Coast), Sue Brady (Mareeba Mem) and Terry McAlary (Brothers Edmonton) will play with and against some of the best bowlers in Queensland. The 48 selected bowlers also see five former TFNQ bowlers, Kurt Brown (Across the Waves), Tyler Pettigrew (Pine Rivers Mem), Emma Spicer (Enoggera), Noelene Dutton (Enoggera) and Dee-Anne Robertson (Broadbeach) also involved in the series. BPL STATE FINALS – Yungaburra bowlers Tyler Tucker, Gavin Johnson, Derek Scott and David Bowles upheld the strong TFNQ reputation in the BPL state finals held at the Pine Rivers Club. “Well played boys you did Yungaburra and TFNQDBA proud, two wins from three games, beating Pine Rivers and Booval. A loss to Graceville cost the Yungaburra team, on countback, a place in the national final.” YUNGABURRA WIN PRITCHARD CUP – The Pritchard Cup was played at Malanda Bowls Club over the weekend and won by Yungaburra with 4 wins and an aggregate of 108. Considerin­g the Sunday trip, Saturday had a very good roll up of 20 who enjoyed a game of pairs. Bragging rights went to L. Fedalto and G. Steve. On Sunday, a happy bus load paid a social visit to Gordonvale for social bowls. As usual, Gordonvale club were excellent hosts so the afternoon was enjoyed by all. Don’t forget to check the board for competitio­n games. Graham would like them played as soon as possible as Christmas is just around the corner and he is struggling to get the competitio­ns completed prior to presentati­on night. The next monthly self-selected triples will be held on Sunday, November 4. Ladies, today’s social bowls names in by 12 noon for 1pm start. No results available from last week. Sunday we welcomed bowlers from Innisfail Club for a friendly game of bowls and afternoon tea. We didn’t have winners for the afternoon but made random draws for lucky players. It was good fun and we will have a return visit. Next Sunday is Challenge Match at Brothers Edmonton Club. Four more players are required. Friday night barefoot bowls from 4pm. Steak burgers and sausage sizzle from 6pm. The final of the mixed pairs resulted in victory to M. Walters, M. Hetherton over T. Ichise, K. Richardson, 29/9. “B” pairs saw K. Richardson, M. Lynch beat A. Paraha, W. Edwards 27/15. The final of the men’s triples will be played at 1pm, October 20, between K. Crump, T. Mawer, S. Smith and K. Richardson, M. Lynch, A. Radford. On the social scene, NewsXpress Edge Hill Tuesday triples went to Bazz, Allan, J. Gelatly. Norm Kehrer, Chippy and Steve Wilson claimed second money. Thirsty Thursday very social bowls resulted in Mike Ireland, Neil Malyon and Jeff Smith being named by the selectors as standouts. This day’s program of shortened time, minimal costs, to help new bowlers has resulted in numerous players graduating to Sunday mornings and club competitio­ns. Friday evening’s scroungers was won by Terry, from Mal and Gabby. The Sunday morning’s computer program proved its worth again with only three of the 16 teams winning both games. Winners on the day were Jim Hope, Mumbles and Ernie Harris. Second to Rod Moody, Des Kennedy and Barry Hare. The money back lucky card draw went to Sharky Skardon’s fours team. Results, Wednesday, October 3 Social bowls A lovely afternoon presented itself to Anna Della Bella, Alan Hudson and Chris Lower who defeated Delmo Tarditi, Barry Green and Tony Haydock 19/16 NORTH/SOUTH SHIELD-GORDONVALE One Silkwood team of four ladies joined other FNQ teams to play against the CDLBA teams at Gordonvale. 48 ladies competed in 3 games for the shield, intermitte­nt rain and wind made the games at times trying. The clear winners were the CDLBA teams with 10 wins, two draws +260 points but the FNQ teams did not disgrace themselves with six wins, two draws +190 points. Last Friday night, the barefoot bowls competitio­n was played out with Tim Kerrigan running out the winner and going home $250 richer. Into second place Vera Rowe, then regular barefoot bowlers Cathie Lucas followed by Sam Campbell, all being suitably rewarded. This competitio­n will be repeated in the future. All players welcome, watch this space. In Friday’s games, Shane McInerney, Angry Ollson and Tabatha had two wins 12-8 over Tyler’s team then 14-10 against Anna Banana’s team. Tyler managed a win over Rooster’s boys 9-6, however, Rooster got up 10-4 over a luckless Anna Banana 10-4. Sunday’s game saw Fred Caltabiano and Stephen Ollson win a close, hard-fought game over Pumpkin Pete, Nipper Villalba and Louie Fedalto scoring three shots on the last end for 22-18. Fred picked up the MVP. Next Saturday, social bowls start at 1.30. Please ring the club on 4064 2179 by 1pm to assist in the catering and team allocation.
