League greats key players in Lynn’s recovery

- ROBERT CRADDOCK

REJUVENATED Chris Lynn said counsel from rugby league greats Johnathan Thurston and Gorden Tallis helped him fight through the dark days before his latest form surge.

Batting bruiser Lynn, whose career has been disrupted by a series of major shoulder problems, is in his best physical shape for years, his confidence reflected with two centuries and three half-centuries in the JLT Cup.

Lynn hit 27 of the 62 sixes the Bulls struck in the tournament which raised $100 each for Australia’s largest food relief organisation Foodbank, who yesterday received a $6400 cheque (including two women’s sixes by the Queensland Fire) which, officials claim, will have 20 times its spending power for food often used as landfill.

Lynn’s challenges are ongoing and such is the delicate state of his shoulders he intends never to dive on a cricket field again.

He said Queensland Cricket’s medical staff had done an “amazing” job and he supplemented their efforts by looking outside the sport for advice on the mental challenges.

Lynn said encouragement from Thurston – who gave Lynn a brace he wore during in his recovery earlier this year – and Tallis helped him on the road to recovery.

Lynn will leave for Dubai on Sunday where he will join the Australian Twenty20 side for a series against Pakistan.

“JT sent me a message and he has his issues in the past. I was pretty desperate to get to the Indian Premier League and it was pretty cool hearing someone like him ….

“I spent a fair bit of time with Gordy Tallis. Those football guys have been through the wringer. They have been on the biggest and best stages so I resorted to looking at other sports to get me through.”
