INNISFAIL women’s rugby league player Kate Haren can now add Darwin Brothers to her playing resume after slipping on a white shirt to help out at a friendly game at Callendar Park on Saturday. Even with the 9-a-side format adopted when officials realised Darwin didn’t have the numbers, Haren and several others were still needed to fill in for the visiting team. Haren, the coach of a combined Innisfail team made up of local players and talent from Cairns, Townsville and the Tablelands, quickly proved a hit with her young new teammates as she guided and encouraged them around the paddock. The 38-4 final score to the home side didn’t dampen the visitors’ enthusiasm and players happily posed for photos with Haren, who played for St George Illawarra Dragons in this year’s inaugural NRL Women’s competition.

Tall timber for Razzle

RAZZLE has ramped up its efforts to be more competitive in the upcoming 2018-19 Darwin Basketball season after recruiting young gun Josh Spiers from the Ipswich Force in the QBL. Spiers is a big signing for Razzle, after he averaged 16 points per game in the recent QBL season and spent time with the Cairns Taipans during preseason. This announcement on the back of former NBL player Timmy Duggan signing on as head coach means Razzle should be more competitive, after finishing its 2018 championship campaign with six wins and 15 losses. Spiers played his freshman year with Loyola Marymount University and spent his final two years of college at Cal State San Marcos, both in southern California. Born in Townsville, Spiers, measuring in at almost 201cm, has made a name for himself as a big guard who can knock down outside shots on a regular basis.
