Time to nominate region’s achievers
THE search is on for the Far North’s biggest achievers.
Nominations for the 2019 Australia Day Awards are now open across the Cook, Mareeba and Douglas shire councils.
Mareeba Shire Mayor Tom Gilmore said the awards were a chance to recognise unsung heroes who had done extraordinary things for or on behalf of the community.
“These awards are tailored to celebrate the achievements of individuals or groups who inspire us through their accomplishments in service to our community, culture and sports, and challenge us to make our own contribution to a better community,” he said.
“The awards pay tribute to the special people in our community who have gone above and beyond to help improve the lives of others and contribute to a diverse, friendly and vibrant community.
“We strongly encourage everyone to nominate someone they know to be considered for an Australia Day Award.”
While award categories vary for each of the councils, some regular categories include Citizen of the Year, Young Citizen of the Year, Volunteer of the Year, Arts and Cultural Award, Environmental Achievement Award and sports awards.
Nominations for those within the Cook Shire close on November 19.
Douglas Shire nominations close at 4.30pm on November 23, with the awards to be presented at the Australia Day Awards ceremony at Port Douglas Community Hall on January 26, 2019.
Nominations for the Mareeba Shire close by 3pm on December 17. The ceremony will be held at the Mareeba International Club on the evening of January 25, 2019.
Nomination forms are available at local council offices and libraries or online.
Tablelands Regional Council will open nominations for their 2019 Australia Day Awards early next month.
