Cultural experience at park

-

ON October 10, Year 3 students from Our Lady Help of Christians went to Tjapukai to learn about indigenous culture.

We walked to the river and we saw a turtle and a big fish. Next we practised throwing the boomerang. You have to hold it at 12 o’clock and then 1 o’clock and then you throw it. I got two turns.

Then we walked to the other small house and practised throwing spears. There were two targets – one was blue and one was red.

Cooper Young threw the spear and it nearly stuck onto the target. Lacey Aylett also hit the target but the spear fell.

Then we went to a room to listen to music. The music was loud and the Aboriginal people were singing in a different language. One man was playing a didgeridoo.

When he finished six boys and one girl came to play instruments. They used rocks and broken boomerangs.

Later we went to a big room. There were so many seats and a movie screen. There was a map of Australia drawn on the ground.

A man started to talk about Aboriginal stories. Then we watched a movie about two brothers fighting. One man was fire and one was water.

In another room there was a man showing us their things.

We saw different kinds of boomerangs and things they used for finding food. We were allowed to touch some things and passed them on so everyone could see.

He told us about a food that looks like a big blueberry that we should not eat.

We enjoyed learning about Tjapukai.
