Play standard draws praise

- JORDAN GERRANS

GOLF FNQ Golf Association President Danny Bradley is impressed with how competitive the opening two rounds of the 2018 FNQGA Pennants season has been.

After starting at Gordonvale, the second week of competition was played at Mossman Golf Club on Sunday with the 75mm of rain received by the course not causing issues for the Far North golfers. Across the Agrade competition, Cairns was too strong for Innisfail, Half Moon Bay swept Mareeba, while Atherton bounced back from their opening round loss to beat Gordonvale.

Innisfail stalwart Andrew Rose fought out an entertaining match against Cairns’ Matt Spilsbury, winning 1-up to deny Cairns a clean sweep.

Atherton fell to Cairns firstup at Gordonvale, but bounced back from last week’s 4-1 match loss to do the same to Gordonvale.

With several of the matches going down to the 18th hole to be decided, Bradley says the competition is as strong as it has ever been.

“Some of the clubs that you would say are the bigger clubs are not winning easy as they may have done in years gone by,” Bradley said.

“Those bigger clubs are still winning but not by the margins they would have years ago. The competition is as competitive as it has ever been at any stage in the past.

“Many of the matches are going to the last couple of holes in each grade, which keeps it exciting for everyone.”

Atherton will host the third round of the season this Sunday.
