Baynes scores community award at Boston

-

MAREEBA’S Aron Baynes is a bruiser on the court but he is also making his presence felt in the community.

The Boston Celtics centre was recognised with the 2018 Community Champions award presented by New England Baptist Hospital over the weekend.

“Through his energy and positive spirit, Aron Baynes continues to inspire kids throughout Boston,” Boston Celtics released on social media.

The NBA season tips off on Wednesday.

Baynes and Boston open their season against the Philadelphia 76ers.

■ CAIRNS’ Cayla George’s Melbourne Boomers career started with an upset defeat on Saturday evening as her new club was knocked over by Bendigo Spirit.

George grabbed a doubledouble, 10 points and 11 rebounds, in her first outing but the defence, rebounding and shooting of the Spirit were too much with the visitors walking away with a 10-point victory.

George previously played with Townsville in the WNBL but crossed over this season.

The Boomers now move on to taking on the Canberra UC Capitals on Friday night (October 19) in Geelong.

■ REGULAR Far North-visiting jockey Peter Cullen had a day out at Bowen Turf Club on Saturday, riding four of the five winners on the card. In the race Cullen did not greet the judges, he finished second to Townsville’ Bonnie Thomson.

He finished the card by collecting the $10,000 Bowen Cup Benchmark 65 Handicap (1810m), to make it four for the day.

Cullen piloted Grey Missile in the 2018 Cleveland Bay Handicap for Tolga trainer Roy Chillemi.
