Thursday, October 11: Winners B Price, G Butigieg, J Azzopardi. B Smith, A Azzopardi and R, Omodei were second. Thursday, October 18: Mixed social bowls. Names in by 1pm. Play starts at 1.30pm. Visitors and new bowlers are most welcome. Friday, October 19: Mixed twilight barefoot bowls. Names in by 6pm. Sausage sizzle plus game for $10. All welcome. Come along and enjoy a great fun night. Saturday, October 20: Watch board for competitions Sunday, October 21: Mixed social bowls. Names in by 1pm. Play starts at 1.30pm. Competitions open for 2019. On Thursday, the threat of rain might have fazed some of our bowlers as only 20 players attended. The winners on the day were D Lowe, G Edgerton and K Clark. On Saturday, 12 hardy stalwarts turned up, but unfortunately just as we were ready to start play, the heavens opened and play had to be abandoned. Two competition games were played during the week. In consistency singles, G Goes defeated P Anderson. Men’s club triples resulted in a win for F Catelan, D Irwin and C Smith over S Dunne, G Spina and K Clark. Please help Graham out by getting your competition games played as soon as possible. All competition games need to be completed before presentation night in December. As this only leaves about four weeks, Graham will be forced to invoke the “play or forfeit” rule to achieve this. Last Sunday, a number of our members took part in the Silkwood mixed triples with 14 teams taking part in some very close games with only two teams having two wins. Last year’s winning team of Graham Anderson, Pam Anderson and Diana O’Brien was one and they went on to win the trophy again on a count back. Congratulations. When asked the secret of their success, Graham was heard to say “That’s easy, just ask two women to be in your team”. Coming events: November 3-4. Innisfail/South Johnstone self-selected triples. Tuesday, October 9. An invitation to district clubs to play a game of running fourth had mixed reception and two clubs were unable to keep their commitment. The remaining 16 players delivered a high standard of play. The winners of the day were Daphne Kirkman, Pam Anderson, Helen Patterson and Anne Rule with 3 wins +52 points. Runner up was the Silkwood team of Denise Charman, Jean Messina, Carol Lowe and Jeannette Bucklar 2 wins +51 points. Well done. Wednesday, October 10, social bowls: A lovely afternoon for a social get together with 10 players divided into two teams performed at their best. Anna Della Bella, Barry Green, Chris Lower d Alan Hudson, Delmo Tarditi and Len Charman 24-13. Denise Charman and Karin Rastoll d Tony Cates and Brian Brooks 36-17. Saturday, October 13: TFNQDLBA Presentation Day at Edmonton. One Silkwood team of four ladies joined other teams to play against other district teams. Two games of bowls were played before lunch followed by the presentation of this year’s winning competitions and their bowlers. Congratulations to all of the prize winners. Sunday, October 15: Silkwood Bowls Club mixed triples. Fourteen teams comprising of 42 bowlers from clubs as far as Atherton, Babinda, South Johnstone, Innisfail and Tully competed against each other in two games. The prize money went to the Innisfail team of Graham Anderson Pam Anderson and Dianne O’Brien. Congratulations. The runner-up prize went to Babinda and third prize to Silkwood. Friday night barefoot bowling and barbecue at 6pm is enormous fun. Come along and try our bowls game. Free bowls coaching on the first Saturday of each month starts at 9am at Silkwood Bowls Club. All welcome. For more information call Denise on 0400 791 517. Social bowls on Wednesdays and Sundays, register by 1pm for a 1.30pm start. No play took place on the weekend. On Saturday it was due to the rain and on Sunday it was because a large contingent of bowlers were either competing at the Mossman Men’s Fours or locally supporting the Silkwood Mixed Triples. Although our away players enjoyed their labours, they were unfortunately unsuccessful with the prize money. Saturday, October 20: Social bowls plus afternoon tea and a chance to get some practice and a feel for the green. 1.30pm start. Sunday, October 21: The club is holding a $500, self-selected, two-bowl triples event at 1pm. Register early for the two games. Barefoot, new and old bowlers all welcome for afternoon tea and good fellowship. Ring Shane on 0447 056 431 or Tim on 0457 981 111 for your spot. Get your teams in for the South Johnstone and Innisfail Cassowary Coast Carnival of Bowls which will be held on November 3-4. If you want a crack at the $4800, ring Alf Strano on 0408 456 889 or Shane Mcinerney on 0447 056 431 for your team’s spot. Once again the strong breeze made it difficult for some of the thirty players including a player from Innisfail to bowl to their full potential. At the end of the day winners were John Frisch, David Iverarch and Phil Buntain. Every Monday we start playing at 1.30pm on the covered West Cairns Bowls Club green and conclude at 4.30pm after a break for afternoon tea. All registered bowlers. either local or visiting, are welcome to join us. We ask that our selector Rosemary is aware of your wish to play by contacting her on 0409624623 before 1.00pm and any new player advise their usual playing position. Cards are called at 1.15pm and we request that all players are present at that time. We look forward to see many new bowlers on our green in the near future enjoying the social atmosphere. There’s a huge program coming up for the club commencing with our biggest day ,the Westco Motors Volkswagen “Bring A Mate” day this Sunday morning. Numbers are limited to 80 players and we are already approaching that number. Regulars need to nominate now. The Men Of League bowls day is booked for Saturday, November 17 which is also open to club bowlers, many of whom are former rugby league players. After that, we have our regular Christmas fancy dress bowls morning with extra prizes on Sunday, 25th November. In competition news, the final of the club triples between teams skipped by Steve Smith and Alby Radford as previously announced has been switched to 2pm this Friday. A pairs match between K.Richardson,M.Lynch and D.Lazarus,J.Duffield resulted in victory to the former 22/15.
