FNQ GOLF

MAREEBA VERSUS CAIRNS With 4 matches to 1 wins in the opening two rounds, Cairns A Grade were expected to continue their winning form, especially with the return of the 2018 Golf World Cairns FNQ Golf Championships winner Frank Power who had missed the first two matches. Whilst Frank comfortably accounted for Michael Cade and Jamey Redman defeated Tim Lambert; Michael Benjak, Lui DeZen and Alex Hodi obviously had other ideas with Michael defeating Matt Spilsbury 2 up and Lui and Alex winning their matches on the 17th hole of their games. In B Grade, Cairns bounced back from last week’s loss to easily account for Mareeba 4 matches to 1 and only for Mareeba Club Captain Gavin Smith’s hot streak with his putter Jon Geck would have made it 5 to 0. In C Grade Mareeba certainly came out firing after losing their first two matches of the season to defeat Cairns 4 matches to 1 and but for Cairns Bruno Meier hanging on for a win on the 18th hole over Mareeba Club President Ron Blake they would have had a 5 to 0. INNISFAIL VERSUS HMBGC What a difference 12 months makes, this time last year HMBGC were 1 win from 3 matches in A Grade and would miss the 2017 Final Series. Fast forward to 2018 and not only are they strongly contending for the 2018 Final Series they are leading A Grade after 3 rounds. Today they again showed they will be formidable no matter where they play with a 4 to 1 outcome. It was the battle of the two Jakes (Jake Cockle from Innisfail and Jake Hopper from HMBGC) that stopped a clean sweep with Innisfail Jake prevailing 2 holes to 1. With HMBGC win this week and getting the point for the bye next week it sets up a block buster game in the last round when they play Cairns and could possibly decide who qualifies at #1 for the Finals (dependant on next week’s match) in A Grade. In B Grade, HMBGC also stepped it up another level winning 5 matches to 0, however it was no easy win with 3 of the matches either going extra holes or finishing on the 17th. In C Grade, HMBGC who have been the most consistent C Grade Club in pennant for a good number of years moved into sole passion of the #1 spot with a 3 matches to 2 win. GORDONVALE VERSUS MOSSMAN In my Saturday Radio Report I called Mossman winning A and C Grade and Gordonvale winning B Grade, as it turns out all three predictions were correct, Mossman’s wins in A Grade were very convincing – 3 matches to 2, with Mossman Club Captain Wayne Christensen winning the battle of Club Captains over Gordonvale’s Jay Lloyd 5 holes to 4. In B Grade – Gordonvale winning 4 matches to 1, with it looking like Gordonvale’s Ben Groves is still celebrating the Roosters NRL 2018 Premiership win. The rest of the Gordonvale B Grade side winning their individual matches convincingly, with a friendly rivalry renewed between Chook Hendrie from Gordonvale and Geoff Goodwin from Mossman going to Chook 7 holes to 5. In C Grade, Mossman certainly bounced back after suffering their own five matches to nil loss in the first round, having the bye last week to this week handing Gordonvale a 5 matches to 0 loss, although two of those matches were only won on the last hole or went to extra holes. In all Grades HMBGC is the only clear point’s leader at this time, however with a number of potential possibilities in the remaining two rounds some places may very well be decided based on holes won in the preliminary rounds. Next week sees HMBGC hosting, with draw, catering and playing details to be confirmed.
