Trainer keen for races to relocate

LEADING Cairns trainer Trevor Rowe has backed industrial action that will see this Saturday’s Townsville race meeting called off.

Queensland’s racetracks will be quiet for Cox Plate day and again on Melbourne Cup day as a racing alliance, made up of trainers, jockeys, owners and breeders, protests the State Government’s treatment of the industry.

“I most definitely support it,” Rowe said yesterday.

“Contrary to what they think, the State Government is not doing enough for racing in Queensland.

“We are a long way behind our counterparts in Victoria and NSW.”

Rowe said the State Government was out of touch, highlighted by the fact Member for Cairns Michael Healy was unaware that industrial action was being taken.

“Michael has been very supportive of the Cairns Jockey Club but when I spoke to him (on Monday) he was unaware that action had started,” the trainer said.

“Poor old Michael would have felt embarrassed because his colleagues in Brisbane didn’t inform him. The Racing Minister probably didn’t think (the strike) would go ahead.”

Rowe said the bug bear of the racing industry in Queensland was prizemoney.

“I know the State Government tipped in $70 million not long ago, which was a huge lift, but they could add another $70 million and they’d still be short,” he said

Losing this Saturday’s Townsville meeting could have a big impact on several Far North trainers as the program was scheduled to host two $30,000 races for two-yearolds.

Rowe himself was hoping to send promising colt Loud ‘N’ Loose to Cluden Park for the Pallarenda Stakes.

The two-year-old son of Sidereus was an impressive trial winner at Atherton earlier this month.

“He’s shown promise but there have been about five two-year-old trials in North Queensland and they’ve all had winners,” Rowe said.

“Until you get them to the races you don’t know what you’ve got.”

Rowe said Racing Queensland needed to get on the front foot and move the Pallarenda Stakes races to Cairns next Wednesday.

“I think it would be in the best interest of racing and a commonsense solution,” he said.

“Townsville would be disappointed to lose them as they’ve been longstanding races there, but I don’t think those twoyear-old races should be postponed.

“The problem you have with two-year-olds is that they are not an all-season racehorse and you have to treat them with kid gloves.

“If those races aren’t held soon the amount of two-yearolds in work might have diminished.”

At this stage there is no threat to the non-TAB Melbourne Cup day meeting at the Cairns Jockey Club on November 6.
