SOUTH JOHNSTONE

Sunday’s self-select open two-bowl triples was a successful event due to work from games director Tim Kerrigan and president Shane McInerney. Fourteen teams filled the green with bowlers travelling from Millaa Millaa, Babinda and Silkwood. With Anne Windsor bringing a team from Cairns along with a strong contingent from Innisfail, it made a good mix. Even young Frankie Obah from Edmonton came for a quick lesson. At the end of the day, with a mixture of some wild results and some tight finishes, the winners were the Silkwood team of Denise Charman (who is a district ladies rep), Brian Meyer and a new-found skip Dan Dunne 4+37. Then came a local crew – Albert Holder, Fred Caltabiano and skip David Leach on 4+18 – and running in third was Kelvin Albert, O. B. E Peter Broccardo waving the flag and skip Johnstone boy Tony Burns, who is playing top bowls this year. Plans are afoot to run four per year as this gives all bowlers a chance to play on a higher plane without getting blown away. No bowls next Saturday, however, Sunday bowls starts at 1.30pm. All welcome, bowls supplied with coaching and afternoon tea for only $10.

WEST CAIRNS MEN

Our major sponsor Westco Motors Volkswagen exceeded themselves on Sunday by providing a display of new vehicles for inspection on our spare green plus numerous giveaways for players at our annual “Bring A Mate” day. Company rep Cameron and staff enjoyed their bowls and promised special deals for bowlers. Hopefully, some of the 80 participants will follow through on their initial interest. A Westco team of Graham, Harry, Jack, Cameron and Steve Smith took the spoils in their section while Royston, Wagga, George Atkinson and Phil Buntain won theirs’. Ian “Choc” Casey, having his first ever game, impressed observers and shows promise. The final of the club triples on Friday provided one of the highest standards and most thrilling matches in years. While all players were in top form, experienced skips Steve Smith and Alby Radford were outstanding under pressure. The scores were locked at 18 all with one end to go. Kevin Richardson, Mick Lynch and Alby Radford won the last end to defeat Terry Mawer, Kev Crump and Steve Smith, 20-18. A pairs match saw S Carolan and J Johnston defeat K Richardson and M Lynch, 17-11. NewsXpress Edge Hill Tuesday went to Barry Butt, Heath Flannery and Jim Duffield. Second D Jacoora, D Lawton, A White. With numbers continuing to increase, the aim is to play some fours matches rather than turn players away, especially in summer under the roof. Byrnes Meats Thirsty Thursday standouts as chosen by the selectors were Tamika, Yakka and Johnny Greenway. Cyclone Metal Roofing Friday Scroungers resulted in Gabby Billik winning over Toowoomba visitor Marilyn Studds. Our next big day is the Sunday morning before the Melbourne Cup when sweep participants join regular bowlers on the green. The sweep will be conducted after bowls and refreshments are provided to those members. Those still not paid up need to see Jonesy ASAP.
