THE Far North will be well represented tonight when the Young Matildas take to the field in Lebanon against Mongolia. Mossman export Winonah Heatley and Whitfield’s Aoife Colvill are in the Australian squad for the first phase of qualifying of the 2019 AFC U19 Women’s Championship. Tonight’s game kicks off at 6.30pm. The Young Matildas will play Lebanon on Friday and Hong Kong on Sunday.

Baseballers beaten

AUSTRALIA have lost 14-7 to Korea at the U23 World Cup in Colombia despite leading 6-0 in the first inning. Former Cairns baseballer Jack Barrie played leftfield for the Aussies but was overshadowed by a standout performance from Mitch Edwards, who achieved the rare feat of hitting a homer both left and right-handed. Australia’s final game in Group B is against Puerto Rico today.

Mundine protest

OUTSPOKEN boxer Anthony Mundine has confirmed he will sit down when the national anthem is played before his fight against Jeff Horn next month. Mundine reaffirmed his belief the anthem is a “white supremacist song” and in a move similar to NFL and basketball players in the US, will silently protest while it’s sung at a national sporting event. Mundine fights Horn on November 30 at Brisbane’s Suncorp Stadium and had asked his rival’s promoters not to play the anthem. In response, Horn’s promoters Duco Events say they will play it three times, before two title fights and the main event. “If I had it my way, the anthem would not be sung, they’d play Yothu Yindi’s Treaty, give us something, what are you going to give our people?” Mundine said.
