Far North Invictus athlete on charges
A FAR Northern army veteran and business owner has quit the Australian team at the Invictus Games after it was revealed he is facing drugs and weapons charges.
Tyrone Ian Gawthorne, who won a silver medal for powerlifting, was allegedly found with a stash of cocaine and anabolic steroids at Mooroobool last month.
The 36-year-old is facing four offences: two counts of possessing dangerous drugs, refusing to allow police access to mobile phones and failing to safely secure a weapon in a car.
Cairns Magistrates Court documents allege he was arrested on September 17 on Swallow St possessing cocaine and fluoxymesterone.
He was held in custody for two nights before being granted bail on strict conditions, including reporting to police three days a week, surrendering his passport and not being allowed within 100m of any international departure point.
Mr Gawthorne, who coowns Body Beyond Belief, also had to provide police with access codes to the seized phones and all account information, including his iCloud account.
He has since apologised for failing to tell Australian team officials about his arrest. The former rifleman denies taking any drugs that may have affected his performance at the Games Prince Harry founded.
His case will be mentioned in December.
