QUEENSLAND’S Education Minister does not approve of security cameras being installed in school bathrooms – but says there may be cases where the surveillance is justified.

The Cairns Post reported last month concerns about surveillance cameras installed in the toilets of Jubilee Christian College on the Tablelands.

The school says its cameras, which are positioned to view hand basins and walkways only, do not provide any view of the activities inside toilet cubicles.

It claims the cameras have been installed to assist student safety.

“But in areas where we need to enhance the security for the students around loitering areas, I know some schools – because of the design – may have to do that.

“But I’m not sure whether too many schools have done that at all.”

Trinity Bay State High School’s new hall includes two multipurpose courts, a gymnasium and equipment store rooms.

It also has amenities and change rooms/showers, a kiosk/servery, data room and cleaners' room.

Premier Palaszczuk said the new facility would provide a boost to the school’s Talented Athlete Academy Program as well as open up new opportunities for wider community engagement with sporting organisations.
