ALMOST a century has passed since the last gunshot in the “war to end all wars” but still the Cairns RSL Subbranch book of veterans keeps adding new pages.

Sub-branch president Buster Todd said keeping the Anzac spirit alive was as important today as it ever was, as Far North men and women sacrificed minds, bodies and lives with each new conflict.

He backed the Cairns Post’s initiative to commemorate the Armistice of World War I with the release of a 15-day limited edition coin collection ending on Remembrance Day, November 11.

Anything to keep the fire burning.

“We need the younger people of this country to remember the sacrifices their forefathers made,” the former RAAF aircraft technician said.

There are positive signs the message is getting through, with numbers at Anzac Day marches increasing steadily for the past decade.

Mr Todd encouraged younger veterans to contact the RSL and realise they did not have to go it alone.

“I think there’s more recognition now of the types of mental trauma veterans face, and people are more aware,” he said.

“But I think there needs to be greater education to younger vets to realise the RSL is there to help you.

“We will help with any issues, not only for yourself, but also your families.”

A different coin – all legal tender – will be released daily, costing $3 with any purchase of the Cairns Post.
