CYCLONES TOO GOOD FOR ROVERS

- MATT NICHOLLS

CASSOWARY Coast captain Luke McAvoy got what he wanted on Saturday and was rewarded with a victory.

The Cyclones skipper has been calling for his side to bat out the 40 overs and they managed to make it to the final over in the Cricket Far North clash against Rovers.

The Innisfail-based team only managed to post 137 at Griffiths Park, but it proved to be enough.

Rovers were dismissed for 94 in the 31st over.

“It was a great win. We just ground it out,” McAvoy said yesterday.

“The key for us was to bat out the 40 overs and we knew we’d post a total that would be competitive.

“I thought we bowled and fielded well enough to deserve the win.”

McAvoy returned the best figures with the ball, claiming 3-9, but praised teammates for their performances.

“I just cleaned up the tail more than anything,” he said.

Rovers were unable to find any momentum in the run chase and the Cyclones’ bid for victory was helped when they were able to dismiss gun batsman Brenton Edwards for a duck.

“Their whole top order are big wickets,” McAvoy said.

“So it was nice to get Brenton for a duck, but he’s just one of many good batsman they have in their top six.”

Despite the win, McAvoy said the Cyclones had room for improvement.

He said the top order needed to find more consistency and learn how to bat for longer in the top grade.

“That will come as we play more first-grade cricket, but we want the guys to be able to bat out the overs,” he said.

“We have enough attacking batsman in our side so if we can bat the full overs we’ll post a score.”

There is no first grade this weekend due to representative matches in Mackay.
