Reid back to guide Toads’ easy victory

- MATT NICHOLLS

MULGRAVE skipper Justin Reid made a successful return from injury on Saturday to help guide his side to victory against Atherton.

The Toads cruised to victory at Walker Road after restricting Atherton to 121.

Mulgrave finished on 3/123 in the 29th over.

Atherton would have been disappointed with the result, but happy to at least post a respectable tally after being 5/23 early.

A diamond duck for Tom Boorman from a mix-up with Paul Nasser didn’t help the Tablelanders’ cause.

Atherton wicketkeeper Fred Pittorino (49) and tailenders Dylan Pettingill (23) and Lachlan Hollitt (21*) helped save face.

But Mulgrave didn’t make any mistakes in the small run chase, with Jake Roach (41) guiding the way with some of his best stroke play, while Reid (25*) and Nevile Phil (24*) finished off the job.

“It was a pretty good job, but the bowlers deserve all the credit,” Reid said.

“It was just a good team performance.”

Reid was playing his first match of the season after breaking his foot before round one. He said he came through the match with flying colours.

The all-rounder also sent down three overs, claiming 1-10 with his medium pace.

“It was good to have a trundle and get back on a turf wicket,” Reid said.

“It was a bit of a tricky wicket, a bit two-paced.”

Meanwhile at Griffiths Park, Norths managed to roll Barron River just in time to see Winx claim her fourth Cox Plate at Moonee Valley.

Norths finished at 3.56pm and managed to watch the race from the canteen’s TV.

Barron was all out for 98 in the 34th over, with youngster Dylan McDonald the only Bulldogs player to provide any resistance. He scored 54 and it was only him and fellow opener Tim Ward (10) who made it to double figures.

Norths secured a double bonus point for making the runs in 14.2 overs.

Mitch Warnock belted 42 off 37 balls to be the top scorer.
