Tasteful ways to assist Myanmar

-

ON OCTOBER 22, students at Our Lady Help of Christians came to school wearing colourful socks for Sock It To Poverty Day.

Students had to bring a gold coin donation to wear their special socks.

This year the school was fundraising for the children of Myanmar (a country near Thailand) to help them have an education and a better future.

On this day children were not allowed to bring an Esky to school.

Instead of eating normal daily school foods the tuck shop provided fruit in the morning and one cup of rice for every student and teacher at second break.

OLHOC has Rice Day to experience what the people in Myanmar go through daily.

Many poor people only get one cup of rice a day so we acknowledge that by having one cup of rice as well. We can understand how they feel.

It helps us to be more grateful for what we have.

The people at the tuck shop made 30kg of rice.

They had to have 10 rice cookers and filled them all up three times.

The rice they made was sticky and boiling hot.

It was delicious. Even though some people hated the rice all the tuck shop people loved making it for everyone.

In the week leading up to our special day some Year 6 students created a display in a glass cabinet.

We learnt that children in Myanmar play with rocks and not good toys and that they drink dirty water.

By having Rice Day and Sock Day the school community raised $574.45 to help the people in Myanmar build more schools.
