MILLAA MILLAA

The big battle between the Tableland’s three little clubs continued with the final round of the Tableland Challenge held at a very dry and fast Royal Millaa Millaa. After the first round at Ravenshoe Millstream, the team in green held a big lead. That was overtaken by a plucky Mt Garnet at their home track in the second leg. So once again it was all down to the final round to determine this year’s winner. A very large field assembled with all three clubs well represented to fight it out for the much-coveted trophy. Held in a two-ball ambrose format, some very good scores were posted, with the best team results being shared by Danny and Luke Bradley representing Ravenshoe Millstream, and Mick Buckley and Dawn Irvine representing Mt Garnet, both carding a net 61. Great golf guys — but the big prize was the Challenge trophy itself. Millaa Millaa had to rein in Mt Garnet’s four-and-a-half shot lead from round two, so with steely determination and strong presence, the crew did perform well and the 5 best team tally of 316 blitzed both visiting clubs to finish 10 shots clear. Millaa won the challenge 971.25, Mt Garnet runners up with 981.25 just edging out Ravenshoe Millstream 982. A huge thanks to our catering and bar staff for a great day. The fellowship between our three little clubs is a fun, strong relationship even though competition is fierce. Thanks and we look forward to next year’s get-togethers. NTPs 1/10 Reynolds/Hiedke (MMGC), 3/12 Fitzgerald/Slade (RMCC) 5/14 Bull/Nasser (MtGGC) and 8/17 Graves-Buchow/Brown (MtGGC). No longest drives were put out, but tales of monstrous hits with the crazy run abounded in the clubhouse. Next week sees the Malanda RSL / Falls Teahouse Monthly Medal. Let’s hope for some rain soon to lengthen the course again.

FAR NORTH QUEENSLAND GOLF ASSOCIATION

Round four of the 2018 Golf World Cairns FNQGA Pennant was hosted by HMBGC with another hot day for weather and in some cases golf. The drinks cart and the bar were kept pretty busy, thanks to Greg Ferry and clubhouse staff and Grant and his course staff, greens were rolling nicely. Gordonvale versus Cairns In A Grade, Matt Spilsbury’s return to form and the winners’ circle with a 7-holes-to-6 win over Ty Williams also came with the impressive showing of results for a 4-matches-to-1 win by Cairns. The number of holes won in each of their wins will boost their standing in the end-ofseason tally, if placings come down to a countback situation. Gordonvale’s Lee Dunn was again Mr Consistent, salvaging their only win against former Gordonvale member Jamey Redman, 4 holes to 2. In B Grade, Gordonvale comfortably accounted for Cairns 3 matches to 2, and sees them tied at the top of the points table with HMBGC but running second on matches and holes. In C Grade, Cairns took a clean sweep, five matches to nil, and ties them with Mareeba, Atherton and Gordonvale on two points, but sitting fourth on matches and holes. Mossman versus Innisfail After having a few lean years in A Grade, Mossman GC have put together some steady scoring to be tied with Cairns and Atherton on points but sitting 3rd in A Grade on matches and holes after defeating Innisfail 4 matches to 1. It’s also great to see that three of their current A Grade Team are former club and FNQ Junior reps in Elijah Boon, Wade Duncan and Nick Scomozzon. Innisfail’s win in B Grade sees their finals chances kept alive, tied on two points with Cairns and Atherton but sitting in fifth spot on matches and holes. Mossman’s B Grade father-and-son combo of Matty and Couper Smith couldn’t put a combined win on the board today with Dad taking a win and Couper losing three holes to two. (Although Couper did take out the Ravenshoe Millstream Country Club Junior Open on Saturday.) Mossman’s win in C Grade three matches to two has them now sitting outright second in behind HMBGC however a loss to Atherton in the last round could actually see them miss the Finals Series altogether. Atherton versus Mareeba In the Tableland Derby, it wasn’t just about local bragging rights for this year but results today could make or break Finals Series spots. In A Grade, Mareeba were obviously on a high after last week’s defeat of Cairns (and Gordonvale GC as mentioned above bore the brunt of that this week) and while two of Atherton’s wins were very strong, it a took a loss for Mareeba’s Alex Hodi playing in the last AGrade spot on the 20th hole to break the tie and hand the Grade to Atherton after Mareeba’s Michael Cade and Mick Benjak won the first two matches with Atherton’s Kenleigh Mather and Des Riggs winning the next two. The loss drops Mareeba to fifth on the table and while they get a point for the bye next week for hosting, the outcomes of the Cairns v HMBGC and Atherton v Mossman have a direct impact on their Final Series participation. In B Grade, Atherton’s middle three of Roo Brown, Steve Bakss and Hollywood Flynn got them comfortably across the line with four holes to three wins in all of these matches. Like A Grade, next week’s round at Mareeba has the potential to make or break for Cairns, Atherton and Innisfail and even a potential outside chance for Mossman GC. C Grade saw Mareeba sneak through on a last hole win from Peter Johnston, and sitting third in the C Grade standings on matches and holes.
