ATHERTON TABLELAND
HINTERLAND ADVENTURE
RICH farming areas, stunning waterfalls, large volcanic lakes and lush tropical rainforest – the Atherton Tablelands is the sensational highland countryside west of Cairns. The region is a popular destination, and for good reason. There are great bushwalks and picnic locations scattered across the entire region. Enjoy sampling tropical fruit, coffee, gourmet chocolate, cheese, wines and plenty more of the region’s delicious, fresh produce. A day tour through the rural region will highlight the more accessible sites and attractions, while others will prefer a lengthier stay to explore the winding back roads and townships, including Yungaburra, Malanda, Millaa Millaa, Ravenshoe, Herberton, Atherton and Mareeba. The area is easy to navigate and has a spate of museums, cafes, recreation areas and sights to be seen. More popular sightseeing activities include the giant fig trees; large volcanic crater lakes Eacham and Barrine (the former has a picnic and swimming area, the latter a teahouse and boat trip); and the stunning Millaa Millaa Falls (pictured right). Atherton is home to the popular and unique Crystal Caves, a man-made labyrinth showcasing more than 600 crystallised mineral specimens, gemstones and more. Malanda has the Australian Platypus park, while the old mining town of Herberton features the award-winning historic village. In Mareeba, go on a coffee plantation tour or visit Gallo Dairyland and taste hand-crafted chocolates. Wash them down with a few locally-made tipples from Mt Uncle Distillery at Walkamin.
