Where is the democracy?
JUST over a week ago a bill was passed in State Parliament which changes the way we as a society regard human life.
I refer of course to the infamous Termination of Pregnancy Bill 2018. This Bill creates, in law, a class of people who can be killed at will, those who are not yet born. Not only that, if you are a doctor who disagrees with killing the unborn, you must still co-operate with the killing act by referring your patient to be killed. Yes, most doctors regard the unborn child as their patient along with his/her mother. There was nothing for the mothers in this legislation, just the freedom to abort their child. No counselling, no cooling off period, no informed consent, no support, material or otherwise. Just abortion.
Many people feel devastated by the passage of this law and cannot understand the obscene jubilation expressed by its supporters at its passing. To us it is more like a death in the family. We are talking about the killing of defenceless humans, members of our society who depend on us for their protection.
Forty-thousand Queenslanders signed a petition against the Bill. Of the 4000 submissions to the Parliamentary Committee which recommended that the Bill be passed, 78 per cent were opposed to the Bill, so I ask, where is the democracy at work here? It would appear that a minority wanted free access to abortion, led by Jackie Trad and other government leaders, and they made sure they got it.
A sad day for Queensland.
