Printers turning the page
AFTER 42 years in the industry, Mike’s Printery owner Mike Kalina has decided to step away from the machines.
Clients of the successful Tablelands business have been split between two Far North entities, Cardzilla and Trinity Printers.
Mr Kalina, 68, started the business in 1976 in Melbourne, before moving it to Cairns in 1990 and Tinaroo in 2006.
“The business has been great to me and I enjoyed meeting all the different customers over the time,” he said.
“It was only logical to call (Cardzilla and Trinity Printers), as they offer all types of printing, short and long runs, signage, embroidered and printed clothing. They have basically got everything covered.
“Plus they have another office in Townsville catering for that region.”
In January this year, Cardzil- la purchased Trinity Printers to become the largest locally owned and operated printing company in North Queensland.
Former Trinity Printers Ron and Gail O’Shea retired after 50 years in business.
Mr O’Shea started the business in 1968 and had previously approached one of the new coowners, Andrew Nakovics, a number of years ago about selling, but was turned down.
Trinity Printers specialises in offset printing and Cardzilla has expertise in the digital side of the market.
Keeping operations local is important to owners Mr Nakovics and Steve Bates.
“Some of our competitors claim they are printers, but they don’t actually print, outsourcing work from south of Cairns and interstate, which doesn’t help the region,” Mr Bates said.
“We proudly print here in Cairns, giving fast turnaround times and quality product.”
