Torpys’ chance to play together

- MATT NICHOLLS

BROTHERS Brayden and Cameron Torpy say they can’t wait to line up together for the Northern Pride next season.

Brayden returns to the club after one season for the Pride in 2016, while Cameron comes from the Canterbury Bulldogs NSW Cup side.

“It’s going to be great,” said Brayden, a halfback who played in this year’s Intrust Super Cup grand final for Easts Tigers.

“Cameron and I have never played in the same side before and that was one of the big motivating factors to come to Cairns.”

Cameron missed most of the 2018 season in Sydney with hamstring issues and a broken collarbone, but the 21-year-old said he would be ready to go for pre-season training.

“Hopefully that’s all behind me,” the hulking second-rower said.

“It was a frustrating year but I can’t say a bad word about the Bulldogs. They were fantastic to me.”

Brayden carried a shoulder injury throughout the season and had post-season surgery to ensure he’s fully fit for the 2019 campaign.

“I won’t be able to do full contact at training until after Christmas but I should be right to go for round one,” he said.

“I hurt my shoulder in February and played with it, but I had the surgery to clean it up. I will still be able to do my cardio training.”

Brayden was part of the Easts team that hammered the Pride 32-0 in this year’s Intrust Super Cup semi-final at Stan Williams Park.

He said that was not a deterrent when choosing to play with the Far North side.

“They had a great season and played in a lot of close games,” he said.

“We were red hot that day and I think the possession numbers were pretty similar.

“Throughout the season the Pride were one of the better sides and they have a very good young list. But even though it’s young, there are guys with a fair bit of Q-Cup experience.”

Cameron said the lure of the Cairns lifestyle and playing with his brother made it an easy decision.

“We’ve only played one trial game before and that’s it,” he said.

“I really enjoyed my time at the Bulldogs but I won’t miss Sydney.

“It’s just too overpopulated.”
