SAXTON Rohweder, 5, of White Rock, is not the only one with a taste for one of the Far North’s favourite fruits. But soon we’ll all be tucking into mangoes grown in the Tropical Far North as the freshest picks hit our markets and stores.

FAR North Queensland mangoes will soon be spotted at local markets and stores as growers prepare to pick their first fruit of the season.

The popular Kensington Pride variety will be the first to hit the market, with R2E2, Calypso, Honey Gold and Keitt varieties also becoming available as the season progresses.

FNQ Growers chairman Joe Moro said Dimbulah growers were tipped to be the first ones to start their season in the Far North.

“They look great, the quality is fantastic and I think people will have a great eating experience,” he said.

“I think you’ll see some Dimbulah fruit starting to appear at Rusty’s in the next few weeks, maybe next week.

“So if you’re at Rusty’s, keep an eye out because you’ll start to see local mangoes.”

According to the Australian Mango Industry Association, the Mareeba/Dimbulah region is expected to produce 3.5 million, 7kg trays of mangoes this year.

At the season’s peak, which is forecast to be in the first week of December, up to 646,000 trays of mangoes are expected to be dispatched from the Mareeba/Dimbulah region.
