WALLY Gray is loyal to the cause.

The Mossman RSL secretary is looking for evidence of work by returned World War I servicemen who built Diggers Bridge in 1919.

Douglas Shire Council — which is constructing a new two-lane link on Mowbray River Rd — has presented the branch with an original pile placed by the region’s servicemen of World War I.

But Mr Gray is looking for the whole story.

“What I’m after is any information whatsoever about this project, which is significant as it was done by Diggers returning from the Great War,” he said.

Loyalty, a value commemorated in today’s collector’s Anzac coin, keeps RSL sub branches like Mossman ticking.

It is loyalty to the memories of past servicemen and women that drives Mr Gray’s search.

“Sunday is about remembering what the people have done before us and to keep their memory alive through the generations,” Mr Gray said.
