City set to mark big day
IN THREE days the Far North will commemorate 100 years since guns felt silent in 1918.
Cairns City Council and the Cairns RSL sub branch will mark the end of the Great War with a series of commemorative events over the weekend.
“Throughout the past four years, we’ve been acknowledging the Centenary of Anzac,” Cr Manning said. “But this Remembrance Day will be the most solemn and important occasion of all.
“It marks 100 years since the signing of the Armistice to end World War I, a moment of great significance.
“There will be many opportunities for members of our community to participate in Remembrance Day activities and it’s important that we all take a moment to consider what this day means to our nation and the world.”
The Cairns events will run in conjunction with services at Port Douglas and the Tablelands, including a rededication of the Digger statue at the Herberton Cenotaph.
Digital images will be projected on to the walls of the Cairns RSL Club, Cairns Aquarium and Riley Hotel on Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings.
Voices of Remembrance at Munro Martin Parklands will focus on the history and legacy of the community during World War I with songs that reflect on war and peace.
