Council and containers

-

FIRSTLY, congratulations to the State Government for implementing the Containers for Change initiative. This is definitely a step in the right direction in clearing our streets, parks and waterways of some litter.

However, I have two quick questions for the council regarding the scheme:

1. Has the council drawn up a plan for how they will distribute the windfall they’ll earn from selling eligible containers to the scheme? All they need do is sort the recycle waste already coming into their depot and they’ll receive 10 cents per item. I’m wondering how they plan to distribute this cash to ratepayers and the general community?

2. Can the council guarantee that the recyclable materials will indeed be recycled and not just sent to landfill? It all sounds great, but where is the accountability? Cheryll Koop, White Rock
