Bob’s on course to lower handicap

- ROWAN SPARKES

A RECENT run of good form is helping Cairns golfer Bob Turner chip away at his handicap.

Competing in the Monthly Cup at Gordonvale Golf Club last Saturday, Turner said he enjoyed a “reasonable outing”, shooting 85.

“I was a couple over my handicap, but it was a good day,” he said. “Even though I dropped a couple of shots on my last game, my handicap has been coming down lately.”

He said the course had been playing “very short” recently.

“There’s quite a bit of run in it with everything being so dry at the moment,” he said.

“But they’ve done a great job to be able to keep the greens nice and soft.”

A week-in, week-out regular at the Gordonvale Golf Club, Turner said he will be back on course tomorrow and then again this weekend in the hope of improving on last Saturday’s score.

“The goal is to always try to play to your handicap, if not better it,” he said.

Saturday’s Monthly Cup, the last of the season, featured a big field of local competitors eager to test themselves in the cup atmosphere as the season winds down. Graham Real (66) finished the day on top, with Peter Walters (67) and Jay Lloyd (68 on countback) rounding out the top three.
