Latsko’s class gifts United an upset win

- VAL MIGLIACCIO

ADELAIDE United has shocked reigning W-League premier Brisbane Roar in Brisbane on Sunday.

For just the third time in 16 meetings Adelaide beat Roar, managing to keep consecutive clean sheets after going 33 matches without one.

Adelaide’s US attacking midfielder Veronica Latsko scored the side’s first goal of the season and the away winner after the Reds round one scoreless draw with Melbourne Victory.

Adelaide is on equal four points with third-placed Canberra United after the 1-0 win at Lions Stadium.

Now Reds coach Ivan Karlovic is confident his side will keep its undefeated record intact at the only stand-alone clash the Reds will have at Hindmarsh this season against Canberra on Thursday night.

“We’ll turn our attention now to Canberra,’’ Karlovic said in Brisbane before the side flew to Adelaide on Sunday.

“I hope the fans come out to support this team at Coopers.”

Latsko’s winner was sheer class. Five minutes after the break and just two minutes after Reds keeper Sarah Willacy made a brilliant double save – one from Japanese superstar Yuki Nagasato – Latsko, onloan from Houston Dash, scored.

Michelle Heyman was brilliantly involved with a triangular pass to Dylan Holmes.

She threaded the ball to the American who made a ghosting run inside the box.

Latsko only needed one touch, she was clinical driving the ball past Matildas keeper MacKenzie Arnold. W-League round three Brisbane Roar 0 Adelaide United 1 (Veronica Latsko 50m) at Lions Stadium. Referee: Lara Lee. Crowd: 1286
