Free ferry ride is a great idea

-

IT’S not often we receive anything for free.

The innovative Douglas Shire Council is offering Far Northern residents free ferry travel across the Daintree River for four months so people can see and experience the famous rainforests.

It’s intended to give the area a visitor boost during the traditional low season.

The offer is worth $28 a time, money that could be spent at a cafe or another business.

All residents who live from Cardwell to Cooktown, including the Atherton Tablelands, are eligible for a Douglas card for the free ferry travel.

The cable-powered ferry near the end of the Daintree River is the only way to reach the region by road all year-round.

The rainforests and the entire area are special and somewhat taken for granted by many residents.

It’s the only place in the world where two World Heritage areas come together: rainforests meet coral reefs.

The river crossing is the gateway to this section of the Wet Tropics, incredible wildlife and pristine landscapes.

There is lots to do including zip lining, croc spotting and night bush walks and more than 40 places to stay and a number of restaurants and cafes.

It is a wonderful opportunity for many residents to explore their own backyard and bring their friends and visitors as well. Nick Dalton Deputy editor
