No sidestepping for Mudcrabs in sevens

- SAMUEL DAVIS

A QUICK burst into space is all Northern Beaches Mudcrab Bevan Reynolds needs to prove to himself he hasn’t lost any of his trademark zip.

The highly touted FNQ Rugby recruit showed glimpses of his electric pace and skill before injuries robbed him of much of his debut season in the competition.

Having missed three months due to ankle and knee niggles last season, the labourer said this weekend’s Summer Sevens competition at Yorkeys

“I’ve done a lot of work in the gym and building up my body since the injuries. I’m finally feeling pretty good.”

The inaugural event will feature eight men’s and two women’s teams with hopes of growing in years to come.

“It’s good to bring the rugby community together, given how long our off-season is,” organiser Russell Todd said.

“We’d love for it to be an annual fixture. Hopefully, it becomes a staple event and teams come from elsewhere to play in the future.”

Asked if he could pick a tournament favourite, Todd, who will also coach the Crabs, said every team was capable of winning it.

“It’s so far out of the season and it’s a different format,” he said. “If you’re going off the 15a-side form, you’d have to say (reigning premiers) Barron (Trinity Bulls) but JCU (Mariners) have some flyers, too. It’s such a short game that it can just be your day.”

Reynolds and teammate Brandon Maskell hope the Crabs can use the tournament as a building block for greater success.
