Excursion to museum, art gallery a real eye-opener

OUR class was seated around a large art table and we were introduced to the artist Yixy.

She started to pull pieces of fruit out of her bag and place them on the table.

Then she stuck googly eyes on each piece of fruit.

My class went to the Cairns Art Gallery on Monday. We looked at some awesome old paintings created by Aboriginal artist Dick Roughsey. He has over 70 art pieces in the gallery and he has also illustrated lots of Aboriginal Dreamtime story books.

My favourite piece was called 'The Birth of Goobalathaldin.' Then we did an art workshop with Yixy, where we used watercolour pencils. She showed us how to blend the colours and we got to eat the fruit afterwards.

After lunch we went to the Cairns Museum. We had a guided tour with Chris, who was a really nice guy. He told us about how the cane farmers used to live and how hard they worked in the cane fields. There was a giant snake in the museum, it was about 3m long but Chris said they can get much bigger.

Chris showed us a really old telephone, where you had to turn the dial to put in the phone number, and we saw an old kitchen with an old wooden cooling cabinet, like a fridge. I really liked the touch screen table, where you could look at old photos of Cairns.

My favourite part of the day was exploring the museum because there was more history to learn about. I really liked playing with the old telephone and typewriter.
