Not convinced

DAVE Sando, Smithfield (CP, 21/11) has it so right.

There will be the same amount of traffic (and plenty more with all the new homes being built in Smithfield and surrounds) and what will happen when we all get to the Barron River and North Cairns in peak times?

Yes. We will still come to a dead stop and travel 20km/h until we get past the 40km/h school zone that students rarely use.

I hope an emergency vehicle doesn’t need to get through this traffic now that the new “safety” rails have been so thoughtfully erected to protect drivers from, well, it is not a ditch or ravine.

Why not put in a designated left exit lane from the Captain Cook Highway to Kuranda, on the corner of Canopy’s Edge, so this traffic does not enter the roundabout?

Considering the number of drivers who don’t bother to indicate when they are actually turning left to Kuranda.

Perhaps this simple solution may help reduce the near misses (and accidents) from drivers frustrated by the queues and red light (that at times changes within five seconds). Also, why not a turn left anytime with care at the Smithfield shops corner instead of waiting for a red light when no traffic is heading north?

As for the bypass, not convinced. Light monorail maybe from Palm Cove to the city? Julie Woodcock, Smithfield
