Sounds of Christmas

-

ORGANISERS are hoping for the biggest holiday turnout yet at this year’s Christmas in Babinda family festival.

There will be a Christmas show, kids entertainment, including a slide, climbing wall, jumping castle, face painting, laser tag and more.

Babinda Taskforce president Tanya Tuttle said the festival had been going for more than 20 years, starting out as traders’ night.

“We’ve moved it to a weekend show, a bigger festival shutting the main street down, running market stalls,” she said.

The highlight of the event will be a visit from Santa Claus, riding in on a fire truck to appear at the Christmas show.

After throwing lollies to the crowd, Santa will hang around for the evening to get photographs with kids.

Ms Tuttle said about 2500 people attended last year and this year they were hoping to get 3000. “We’re fairly confident we can do it,” she said.

“It’s going to be a hot one, but the event starts at 5pm so we’re expecting by then it will have cooled down enough for people to want to come.

“The Christmas show will entertain kids, rides, a bucking bull, and those sort of rides.

“We have lots of food stalls, and live music through the evening.”

Anyone who has bought from Babinda local businesses in the last month has gone into the draw for the Shop Local competition.

At 8.30pm at the event, the prize will be drawn with the chance to win $1000 and individual prizes from local businesses. Christmas in Babinda festivities will kick off from 5pm tomorrow and run through to 10pm.

Road closures will take place from 1-11pm at Munro Street between Mill Street and School Street.
