AUSTRALIA’S CRICKET SELECTION DEBATE

-

Selectors appear to have largely settled on Australia’s XI for the first Test, with the only query being whether Marcus Harris or Peter Handscomb gets the final spot. MARCUS HARRIS Sheffield Shield scores: 26, 250no, 65, 7, 22, 67, 2, 62. First-class average: 35.5 Test average: N/A Why they’ll pick him: Has been the most impressive opener in the Shield during the past two and a half seasons, with a reputation of delivering his best in big games. Would allow Usman Khawaja, the side’s best batsman, to return to his customary spot at first drop. Why they won’t: Selectors may feel hesitant about opening with Harris and Aaron Finch, the two least experienced batsmen (in terms of Tests) in the squad. Langer says: “Marcus Harris is like my little brother ... he’s a good chance”. PETER HANDSCOMB Sheffield Shield scores: 27, 48, 123, 2, 4, 23, 81, 53 First-class average: 39.22 Test average: 43.63 Why they’ll pick him: Scored almost half of Victoria’s firstinnings total at the Gabba this week, having tweaked his technique with the help of former Test opener Chris Rogers. Selectors may opt for the more experienced option in an attempt to shore up the middle order. Why they won’t: Ordering Harris back to Shield cricket, so soon after he was welcomed to the “brotherhood” and geared up for a Test debut, would be a big blow. Langer says: “I will always be transparent, so I would say it is (a shootout)”.

WHEN WILL THEY MAKE A CALL? Selectors are keen to release the unlucky batsman to play the next Shield round, but it could be a last-minute decision.
