Women reel in plenty of fun and game fishing

- PETER CARRUTHERS

A WHOLE lot of fun was mixed with some serious sport fishing when women competing in the annual Ribbon Ladies Game Fishing competition got among it.

Very light winds made for near perfect conditions on the water off Cairns on Saturday.

Committee member Wendy Wall said the event is often the focus of holidaying anglers from all across the country.

“We had 25 boats take part with anglers from Western Australia and Brisbane and a lot from out of the Cairns region,” she said.

Di Hance landed a 19.46kg spanish mackerel which was good enough to win the prize for the largest fish caught. Victoria Bartlett fishing on Black Magic won the prize for highest total points score in the game fish division.

“It is a good fun weekend, the women relax on the boats and it is nice to continue the tradition and have a good day out on the water,” she said.

Ms Wall said her daughter began fishing the tournament at eight-years-old and this year came back to Cairns from Brisbane to wet a line.

“She’s now 33,” she said. A WOMAN was treated for an electric shock at Dimbulah last night. The 40-year-old received the shock from a stove and was conscious when receiving treatment about 7pm.

Bike crash

A MAN was taken to Mareeba Hospital in a stable condition with non-life threatening injuries following a single-motorcycle incident at a location on Springs Road just after 7pm on Saturday.
