Cause of fatality a mystery
POLICE are investigating what led to a crash that claimed the life of a Rossville man at the weekend.
Emergency services received reports about 2.40pm on Sunday that a car had crashed on the Mulligan Highway, about 1km south of the Annan River Bridge.
Officers found the driver and sole occupant of the vehicle, a 56-year-old Rossville man, dead at the scene.
Preliminary investigations indicate the car left the road and crashed some time overnight.
“(The man) was travelling north along the Mulligan Highway towards Cooktown,” a police spokeswoman said.
“For an unknown reason (the vehicle has) gone across the opposite side of the road, off the road and then has hit a tree.
“He’s been found already deceased some hours later.
“There’s no other information yet as to what has caused him to go off the road.”
Officer-in-charge of Cooktown Police Station, Senior Sergeant John McArthur, said further investigations over the coming days would help shed some light on to the cause of the crash.
“We haven’t got anything definitive yet,” he said.
The crash brings the Far North Queensland road toll to 21 fatalities this year and in Queensland at least 225.
