Dane Torrisi and Makiroa Taia, Year 2, Our Lady Help of Christians

-

ON November 27, the Year 2 classes went to Cairns Aquarium for an action packed excursion. Each group had a guide. In the part showing creatures from fantastic rivers and creeks we saw freshwater animals like exotic eels, fish and slithering snakes.

We had to be very quiet because some animals have sensitive ears and might hide.

We saw a massive long eel that was blind.

We saw an enormous fish, a camouflaged fish by a rock and a tree snake as green as a leaf. Then we got to see the reflecting reptiles.

We saw rainbow serpents. They were as beautiful as a diamond. Then saw the magnificent rainforest animals.

We learnt some interesting facts. Did you know that not all reptiles lay eggs?

We also learned the difference between venomous and poisonous snakes.

We also got to pat a scaly blue tongue lizard called Rex.

We were really lucky to pat him. He felt really spiky and soft. He was very friendly.

We went to the salt water tanks. There were starfish, crabs and different stingrays as well as seahorses.

We got to touch two starfish at the touching tank. One was soft and one was hard and lumpy. It was so hard that you couldn’t squeeze it.

We also saw a shark egg. We chose our favourite coral.

We saw Nemo in an anemone. The anemone was swaying back and forth. The excited eels were slithering around the tank and colourful fish were dancing and showing off. We went to look at the puffer fish. He was poisonous and spiky.

Finally, there was a massive tank full of creatures that were swimming around. The tank was a tunnel. We learnt about sharks, stingrays and how the light made the jellyfish different colours.

We were taught about the grey sharp nosed sawfish, including how it ate its food. It was opening its mouth like a whale. We watched a giant leopard shark and a baby fish that was 2m long. Did you know sharks have five gills to help them breathe and sting rays’ gills are at the bottom of their body? We drew our favourite shark in our booklet.

Everyone should go to the Cairns Aquarium. We recommend that everybody from nine to 90 should go to the aquarium because you can learn facts about sea animals. Go to cairnspost.com.au/competitions and use the code words below for your chance to win.*
