“This centre will have a long-lasting impact on the Cairns community, and we can’t wait to bring it to life.”
Spinal Life Australia chief executive Michael Powell said the centre was in the perfect location, close to the Esplanade, Cairns Hospital and other health services.
“We’re excited to confirm that Keir will join us to construct our healthy living centre, which will put Cairns on the map as a healthcare leader for people with spinal cord damage and related physical disabilities,” he said.
“We’re bringing services closer to home for Far North Queenslanders, supporting them to reach their goals and improving their quality of life.”
The project has received $4.4 million from the Australian Government’s Building Better Regions Fund Infrastructure Projects Stream, which provides grants for projects that will create jobs and drive regional economic growth.

CAIRNS RE/MAX principal Tony Williamson will be one of three guest speakers at the company’s Tokyo office on Sunday.
He will join global development executive director Jan Repa and Hawaii’s Ray Prosek from RE/MAX Aloha Homes to deliver two-hour sessions in each capital city on how to sell in difficult markets.
Mr Williamson said Cairns, Auckland and Tokyo were operating in a buyer’s market at the moment.
He said Cairns had experienced three distinct booms and three distinct downturns.
“The most important thing is getting ready for change, I believe the market will rise,” he said.
“Across the board, the early adapters are the ones who do the best. My biggest tip for the agents will be to maintain their personal enthusiasm and drive.
“Sometimes with external factors you can’t control them, but internal factors you can.”
Mr Williamson travelled to South Korea earlier this year for a similar event and met with company bosses in the Asian country.
