Heroes welcome on big day

THE last Mareeba race day is just around the corner with the Boxing Day meet one of the biggest on the turf club’s calendar.

Gates will open at 11.30am on Wednesday, December 26, with the first race galloping off at 1pm.

There will be five races for the day with addition of the John Parsons Memorial Race, in memory of the late John Parsons. The memorial race will be sponsored by Mareeba Transport, which is owned by the Parsons family.

Mareeba Turf Club secretary Allan Holmes said it was shaping up to be a good day and this year they are aiming to make a more family friendly event.

Holmes said they were encouraging kids to dress up as their favourite super hero.

“We are trying to cater for the kids to make it a family day as well as a race day,” Holmes said.

“There will be a wet and dry jumping castle and face painting.

“The turf club wants to be more a part of the community and encourage everyone to come out for Boxing Day.”

The turf club has also invited community groups to provide the catering.

Holmes said they ask that racegoers support the community groups as all the proceeds that they make go straight back into the community.

On the day, band Careless will be playing until 7pm and there will be drinks and food available for purchase.

Meanwhile, racing in north Queensland heads to Rockhampton this afternoon before Cairns’ Cannon Park hosts a TAB meeting this Thursday.
