Talented duo bound for camp

-

FRESH from playing a leading role in Australia’s gold-medal triumph at last month’s Oceania Under 15 Basketball Championships in Port Moresby, Cairns girls Indiah Bowyer and Shaneice Swain have been named as part of a national basketball development camp in January.

The girls are two of 40 athletes from across the country who will attend the 2019 Australian Development Camp, which aims to identify future Australian Boomers and Opals, at Basketball Australia’s Centre of Excellence from January 24-27.

Cairns State High School basketball Centre of Excellence coach Brad Burdon said the two were “very talented players”.

“They’ve gone from strength to strength with their basketball in recent years,” he said. “Hopefully they can keep progressing.”

While their individual talents speak for themselves, the girls could also be seen as a package deal, due to their chemistry and experience in playing with one another.

“They’ve grown up playing together, so they link very well,” Burdon said.

“When both of them, with all their athleticism, lock in at the defensive end they can be very dangerous – just flying around and being quite active.

“If you’ve got both of them in the back-court together, you’ve got a pretty good pairing there.

“Shaneice will be a very high-level point guard and Indy plays that two-to-three spot – a shooting guard, small forward type of player.”
